Here are some of my favourite games to play:
Settlers of Cataan (the first German game I ever played)
Guillotine (great fun and fast to play)
Carcasonne (remember to place men in fields)
Tikal (hard to learn but worth the time spent)
Blokus (Best played with four people)
Munchkin (this is a very funny game to play)
There are lots of other great games to play but these are the ones I keep coming back to.
Would like to recommend Runebound 2nd Edition from Fantasy Flight Games. It's a board game that simulates an RPG with questing and power-leveling, and does it really well. Even though it takes roughly 2-3 hours to finish, the whole scope of the game feels pretty epic. Playable with 2-6 players, but works best with 2, 3 or 4 players.
